Understanding the Risks of Obesity
Obesity is associated with serious health risks, including an increased likelihood of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, hypertension, and other medical conditions. Several factors contribute to obesity, including:
- Increased consumption of high-sugar, high-fat foods
- Sedentary lifestyles and reduced physical activity
- Genetic predispositions and external influences
To effectively manage weight, a combination of strategies is often necessary, including:
- Dietary Adjustments: Focus on reducing processed and high-fat foods while increasing the intake of nutrient-dense, high-fiber options.
- Physical Activity: Regular exercise is essential for long-term weight management.
- Surgical Interventions: For severe obesity, bariatric surgery can alter the digestive system to aid in weight loss.
- Weight Management Programs: Tailored plans created by specialists that combine diet, physical activity, and habit adjustments.
- Weight Loss Medications: Prescribed alongside lifestyle changes, compounded weight loss medications offer personalized treatment options to enhance weight loss efforts.
Weight Loss Medications: GLP-1 and GIP Receptor Agonists
GLP-1 and GIP receptor agonists are commonly used to help manage blood sugar levels in adults with type 2 diabetes. These medications increase insulin
production after meals, reduce sugar release from the liver, and slow stomach emptying, which promotes a sense of fullness and may help support weight loss
over time. Weight management medications may work best when combined with a healthy diet and regular physical activity.
Porter’s Compounding Pharmacy previously has been able to dispense Compounded Injectable Semaglutide in place of the brand drug for an extended period because the FDA (Food & Drug Administration) placed the brand drug on the FDA’s Drug Shortage List due to supply chain issues. However, the FDA has removed injectable Semaglutide from its Drug Shortage List. The FDA feels that the supply chain issue involving the brand name drug has been resolved at this time. With this FDA decision, we no longer will be able to dispense compounded injectable semaglutide as of May 22, 2025.
Moving forward, Porter’s Compounding Pharmacy does have the ability to dispense the following two semaglutide dosage forms:
- Compounded Semaglutide Nasal Spray
- Compounded Semaglutide Sublingual Suspension (The sublingual dosage form is placed and held under the tongue for absorption)
Please contact Porter’s Compounding Pharmacy for more information about these two alternative Compounded Semaglutide dosage forms. 412-264-2230
